PEARL EDUCATION

Care, Maintenance & Certificates

A gentle routine protects luster, settings, and stringing for years of wear.

PEARLS ARE ORGANIC GEMS

Last on. First off.

Apply fragrance, lotion, cosmetics, and hairspray before putting on your pearls. At the end of the day, remove them first and wipe the surface gently with a clean, soft cloth.

Pearls benefit from being worn, but not from harsh chemicals, prolonged soaking, abrasion, or airtight storage.

THE CARE ROUTINE

Four habits that make a difference

After wearing

Wipe pearls and metal gently with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove skin oils and residue.

When cleaning

Use a barely damp cloth and, only when needed, a small amount of mild soap. Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners.

When storing

Lay the piece flat in a soft pouch or lined box, separated from harder jewellery that may scratch the nacre.

Over time

Check clasps, prongs, knots, and silk regularly. Frequently worn strands may need professional restringing.

WORN OFTEN, KEPT LONGER

Care turns jewellery into a long-term companion

The aim is not to keep pearls untouched. It is to keep them wearable through changing routines, celebrations, and years.

AFTER EACH WEAR

Remove what the day leaves behind

A soft cloth helps lift skin oils, cosmetics, and residue before storage.

SEASONALLY

Check the working parts

Look at clasps, posts, prongs, knots, silk, and jump rings under clear light.

WHEN NEEDED

Restring before failure

Professional restringing can renew frequently worn strands before weakened silk breaks.

KEEP WITH THE PIECE

Preserve its information

Store the order record and any applicable independent laboratory report with the jewellery.

PASSING IT FORWARD

Share care, not only ownership

When a piece becomes a gift, include its care routine and the details that make it specific.

ASK BEFORE ACTING

Uncertain damage needs guidance

Send VARI a clear photo and order number before attempting glue, chemical cleaners, or home repair.

GRADES & CERTIFICATE POLICY

VARI selection tiers and independent reports are not the same

AA+, AAA, and AAAA are VARI's internal commercial selection tiers. They describe our assessment of luster, surface, shape, matching, and overall presentation. They are not grades issued by GIA, GRC, or a Japanese pearl laboratory.

Eligible pieces can be submitted for independent documentation from GRC, GIA, or a recognized Japanese pearl laboratory, depending on pearl type and requested report. Each laboratory uses its own terminology, testing scope, and report format.

For orders over US$300, one applicable independent report is included. For orders of US$300 or less, a report is optional and available for an additional US$50. If it is not selected, no report is issued by default.

Laboratory availability, report scope, and processing time vary. Contact VARI before ordering if a particular laboratory or test is essential.

AVOID

What should not touch your pearls

Harsh chemistry

Bleach, ammonia, vinegar, jewellery dip, hairspray, perfume, and strong household cleaners.

Heat and dehydration

Direct heat, long sun exposure, and very dry storage can affect organic nacre and silk.

Friction and impact

Hard gemstones, rough surfaces, gym equipment, and accidental knocks may scratch or loosen a setting.
